Oldest working postal employee retires - WKRN, Nashville, Tennessee News, Weather, and Sports
DECHERD, Tenn. –
.After 72 years of government service, a Franklin County postal carrier is finally ready to retire.
For the past 37 years, Mancel Prince delivered mail in Decherd, in Franklin County.
"I could still haul mail. I haven't had any complaints," said 91-year-old Prince.
His daily postal route was 99 miles long and covered three counties. Over his postal career, he has driven more than 1.1 million miles. "He is truly an inspiration to all of us. He really is," said acting Decherd Postal Master Vickie Corley.
Before starting work for the post office, Prince was in the Army, and he fought in three wars, including World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam.
"On the 31st of July, 1972 I retired from the U.S. Army," said Prince. The retired command sergeant major didn't need a job, but he told News 2 he is not one to just sit around, so he started working for the post office. "I started working in ‘74 until this date," he said.
Now, Prince has decided to retire, and he worked his last day on Friday.
"You can tell I don't like to [lie] around, because I have been working for the Army or the Post Office for 70 some years," he said.
When asked why he decided to retire, he simply said he thought it was "time to give someone else a job." Prince told News 2 he plans to pursue hunting and fishing during his retirement.
